The Sweetest Dark by Shana Abe

"With every fiber of my being, I yearned to be normal. To glide through my days at Iverson without incident. But I'd have to face the fact that my life was about to unfold in a very, very different way than I'd ever envisioned. Normal would become forever out of reach."
Lora Jones has always known that she's different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora's been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she's far more than what she seems.
England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England's southern coast. Iverson's eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.
Jesse is the school's groundskeeper-a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she's only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

Sixteen year old Eleanore, Nora, Jones has no memory before the age of 10. Shy Nora is left in the care of Blisshaven Foundling Home until she begins telling everyone that she can hear the rocks, the iron bars, jewels and the stars singing to her. Then she is transferred to Moor Gate Institution for Socially Afflicted Youth, a really nice name for an insane asylum. After ice baths and electric shock therapy Nora learns not to speak of the voices. She chooses instead to withdraw within herself and try to be as normal as possible in the hopes of being left alone. With the Kaiser's troops nearing England's shores, all the children in London are sent to the countryside for their protection. Unlike the other orphans, Nora is offered a scholarship to an exclusive boarding school, Iverson School for Girls. Upon her arrival she meets Armand, son of Duke of Idylling, and Jesse, groundskeeper and driver. With Armand she feels connected, as if something within her recognizes something in him. But the attraction between Nora and Jesse is instantaneous, though Nora fights it with all her might. But Jesse has a secret, and he knows the answer to Nora's secret. He knows why Nora can hear the stones and stars sing. Nora is a dragon. Unwilling to believe him, Nora flees him, thinking it a cruel joke on an unsuspecting young lady. With much coaxing on Jesse's part, Nora slowly begins to realize that Jesse may be right. He helps her explore her powers, teaching her how to shift into smoke and eventually a dragon. During one of these sessions, Armand discovers Nora just after she changed to smoke. Instead of this transformation deterring him, it intrigues him more, and he feels compelled to learn more about her. All too soon the idyllic days come crashing down to reality and the dangers of German airships and boats is imminent. Three unlikely allies band together to try and stop the war from coming to Iverson, and one young dragon must fight her own internal battle of the heart.
Once again Ms. Abe brings us back to the world of drakkon, this time in the young adult genre. I remember when I found The Smoke Thief and thought this is an awesome author and a unique spin on dragons! Now here I am again, and Ms. Abe has pulled me back into another wonderful story. Nora's story pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. Nora is a strong character who is relatable even though she has been through the worst atrocities. While Jesse is the love interest, I was more drawn to Armand. Armand is a more complex character who seems cold and spoiled on the outside, but with hidden depths only Nora sees. I guess I prefer the relationships with more struggle. I will say that the love felt between Jesse and Nora is strong and genuine and the ending of the story about killed me! Ms. Abe's writing evoked such strong emotions in me that I cried. My poor husband thought something had happened and I had to wave my hand and say, between sobs, its the book. Needless to say he did not get it! The Sweetest Dark is now my favorite book by Ms. Abe and I look forward to reading book 2 in the series. 5 stars, 1 Flame

Lightning Rider by Jen Greyson Blog Tour

For Evy Rivera, thunderstorms have always caused her physical pain, but she's never known why. When a record-setting storm arrives on the same night her father finds ancient ancestral documents, Evy is set aglow with mysterious tiny lightnings she can command.
Even worse, she alerts some people in the universe who've been looking for her family for a very long time.
Thrown back into ancient Spain and tasked with killing a Spanish legend, she must train alongside Constantine, a sexy yet obstinate Roman warrior. He teaches her how to wield her lightning as a weapon, through more errors than trials. With a relationship as explosive as their late-night training sessions, Evy and Constantine battle their push-pull relationship while trying to ignore the two-thousand-year difference in their birthdates.
Ilif Rotiart, her quasi-mentor, is appalled at Evy's skill. He would prefer to train her father and keep Evy on the sidelines—where women belong. Evy has a feeling Ilif is keeping something from them, but she must play nice until she uncovers the truth. And if he's lying, it will be the worst day of his four-hundred-year life.
Penya Sepadas claims she's Evy's rightful trainer, and she has the prophecy to prove it. Penya doesn't share Ilif's misogynistic attitude, but she does have her own agenda . . . and her own secrets.
Evy must sort through the lies and find the truth behind her family's time-traveling past before the wrong history obliterates the future. She’s spent her whole life fighting for her place. Now, as the first female lightning rider, she'll dedicate her existence to fighting to save the world.
But will Evy learn to manage her lightning and find the truth before it's too late?

What would you do if you had the chance to go back in time and change the course of history? Now think about how that one change would affect the future. When Evy Rivera discovers that she can time travel and alter the course of someone's life, she is faced with the same dilemma. Evy is a Rider, able to harness the energy of lightning to travel in time to pivotal moments in history and change them.
On her first journey she arrives in Spain in 1927 and meets Penya Sepadas, an older woman who seems to know what Evy is. She meets her again on her second trip, thousands of years earlier in 143 BC. Penya is not a rider, but a guide, someone who can help Evy to make the right change at the pivotal moment. Unsure of her motives and given cryptic answers, Evy is understandably hesitant to trust Penya. However, Penya is a great deal better than Ilif Rotiart, a condescending, arrogant, chauvinist who refuses to believe that Evy has any Rider capabilities and focuses purely on her father.
Then there's Constantine, a truly gorgeous man bound to Evy, to protect her and help her to complete her mission. Constantine is a Roman who is tasked with the assassination of Viriato, a Spaniard who is blocking all Roman attempts to conquer Spain. If he, and Evy, fail to kill him, Evy's life as she knows it now will be altered, and not for the better.
I loved the uniqueness of this book. Using lightning/electricity to fuel jumps through time? Awesome! When Evy first arrives in Spain, she is able to understand the people, but barely. When she is in ancient Spain, she is actually able to understand and read their language through a benefit of her rider ability which helps her to translate and understand any local dialect. I immediately thought of Doctor Who, where the Doctor and his companions are able to speak and read the local dialect with the Tardis's help.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lightning Rider and cannot wait for the second book to be released. The attraction between Constantine and Evy is HOT! The plot of this book is resolved, but Ms. Greyson leaves Evy's relationship with Constantine hanging...SO frustrating! Though this is listed as a sci-fi fantasy romance, it is a great, easy read that isn't confusing or complicated as some sci-fi fantasy books can be. If you are a fan of romance, definitely pick up Jen Greyson's Lightning Rider. 5 stars, 3 Flames

Excerpt of The Garden by Paul T Harry
A Love Story
A Saga of Good vs Evil
The Beginning of Humanity's Historic Journey
Adam and Eve are two modern day humans living on the planet Mirra, a world filled with all the conveniences of a space-faring civilized society. Adam is a genetic research scientist and Eve,a medical doctor. Married with grown children the two are quite comfortable in their vocations, but looking to expand their horizons. This yearning leads them to apply for an internship as the new Planetary Progressors for Terran, an earth-like world reeling from the insurgency of the Tro^axk rebellion--a rebellion that has thrown Terran into a quagmire of despair and decay.
With their acceptance to the program, Adam and Eve have no real idea what lies ahead, but after three years of intense training they are sent across the universe to take command of a planet that has grown stagnate in time. Awakening naked in a pyramid temple upon a garden peninsula called Eden, Adam and Eve begin their mission: A mission destined to transform Terran from the backwards cultural cesspool it has become and one designed to prepare its inhabitants for the next coming evolutionary epoch. The only obstacle, Mikatta, the planet's previous despot ruler and the tribes he holds under his spell.
If you've ever wondered who Adam and Eve really were then this story will enlighten you as no other. It is the precursor to everything you have been led to believe.

Excerpt
For three days the Seric Transport hovered silently above the Garden of Eden. Its black metallic hull once again terrifying the tribespeople as it hid the noonday sun that passed overhead. With a sense of foreboding, Adam and Eve idly tried to busy themselves as they awaited word from the starship. The days dragged by and the waiting seemed at times unbearable. Adam and Eve’s children however, looked upon the ship from an entirely different perspective. The majority had never seen such a magnificent craft before and they gazed upon it with wonder and awe. With their curiosity running rampant and their hearts filled with concern, they gathered each day questioning their parents about the mighty colossus.
“How can such an immense ship float in the sky so quietly?” they asked. “Does it really fly to the stars? What is it like? Were they in trouble too? Will the ship be taking them as well?”
Caught up by the whirlwind of events around them, Adam and Eve’s children were now realizing for the first time that their destiny was intertwined with a history of which they had little knowledge. Things were happening to which they had no control and as leaves scattering in the wind they could do little until the breeze settled.
It was toward the evening of the third day, while Adam and Eve sat in the solitude of the inner courtyard, that a glow began to appear before them. They knelt on the ground, and bowed their heads before the golden-lighted entity that took shape. Solemnly a voice broke the stillness. “Adam Korton, Eve Korton,” the voice said, “I come before you bringing charges of betrayal against the Covenant of Lord Jhira, the Metra, and the Life Carriers. How do you speak? Rise and answer.”
Adam and Eve stood and gazed upon Tilon, the Metra they’d succeeded in the rulership of Terran. “Tilon,” spoke Adam quietly, “I would first like to say that we are sorry for our misdeeds, and we are greatly saddened that we have disgraced your efforts here on Terran.”
“It is so noted,” said Tilon pulsating again. The sorrow in his being transmitted to Adam and Eve, “but first let me hear the words of Eve. Why did you transgress the Covenant?”
Relating her story to Tilon, Eve told of Kula’s desire to speed up the Terran process, his dream of uniting the Terran tribes, how Kina had saved her life years earlier, and how she had accepted the idea of going to Kula’s village and mating with Kina.
“Did it never occur to you,” said Tilon in resignation, “that someone else may have had a hand in this magnificent plan? That perhaps it was Mikatta who planted the dream seed in Kula’s head? And that if you had only looked a little closer at the cave lion, you might have noted that it was not driven by hunger toward yourself, but by Mikatta who inhabited its form. You were told long ago, Eve, that Mikatta would stop at nothing to betray you, and yet you withheld vital information from your husband, denying him the chance of helping you. Why do you think Mikatta came to you at the end after you had mated with Kina? Chance? No, my dear. He set you up long ago with a plan in order to trap you. And you graciously accepted his conditions and opened yourself up to the doctrines of unbridled self-indulgence.”
Eve nodded in agreement and hung her head shamefully. “It is true,” she said regretfully, “I could have stopped anytime, but I was enthralled with the prospect of my own self-importance.”
“And as for you, Adam,” continued Tilon. “Why did you transgress against the Covenant? Why did you seek out the Terran woman Tanya and have relations with her?”
Adam glanced at Eve and caught her look of stunned surprise. “I slept with the Terran woman,” he said candidly, “because I didn’t want to face the prospect of ruling Terran alone without Eve. I was afraid that she would be found guilty of transgression and rebellion and taken from me. That thought was more than I could bear. I sought out Tanya and slept with her in order that I might equally share Eve’s fate.”
Adam turned to Eve. “I realized through all of this,” he said, “that I loved you far more than I could ever convey and what good is immortality if you’re not by my side?”
“I love you too,” she whispered in reply, her eyes welling with tears.
“The saddest thing,” said Tilon interrupting the couple, “is that this tribunal would never have had to take place if you had but heeded the doctrines of the Covenant. And what is even more disturbing, is that you, Adam, are chiefly to blame. While it is true, Eve transgressed her authority and our decree, there were at least some extenuating circumstances . . . circumstances which could have modified and mellowed the judgment against her. Unfortunately, your actions have altered these facts. By seeking out the Terran woman you blatantly broke the laws of our decree. Instead of coming to us and asking for compassion and forgiveness, you decided to take matters into your own hands and have consequently worsened the situation. You are far guiltier of playing into Mikatta’s design than Eve. Perhaps what saddens me the most is that the two of you, beings who have known the love of Lord Jhira, who have seen the fairness, the justice, and the compassion that he holds for his creations—how could you throw it all away? It is beyond my understanding.”
Adam and Eve continued to listen as Tilon informed them that he would be returning to the ship for their trial. “Understand,” he instructed, “the two of you shall now consider yourselves to be on probation. As the acting Metra in charge of Terran, I will proceed to expound your statements and I will try to defend your positions to the tribunal. When judgment has been reached, I will return with the verdict.”
Adam and Eve accepted Tilon’s words and bowed once more before the golden lighted entity. “Again,” said Adam, “we are truly sorry to have disgraced you.”
“It is so noted,” responded Tilon, beginning to fade. Suddenly he stopped and his being returned fully to the couple. “I have been given the liberty,” he said, “to inform you that a huge army is amassing in the North.”
“The tribes of Tull?” inquired Adam.
“Yes,” answered Tilon, “they are already about fifteen thousand strong and their numbers are growing swiftly. The leader Talta is trying to unite all the tribes within the northern territories. He plans to march on Eden soon.”
Adam shook his head in despair. “What should we do?”
“The matter is in your hands,” answered Tilon. “This is a situation of your making. We cannot interfere.”
“I understand,” acknowledged Adam. “Are we permitted to leave the garden? I see no value in the death and destruction that would result if we defend Eden.”
“Yes,” said Tilon, “you and anyone else who wishes to follow may leave. Although, I must hasten to add, until a verdict is reached the Tree of Life must remain in Eden.”

Conclusion:
A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience.
There are moments in this tale that are especially well done... story telling at a level that I'd be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work.
As a dedicated YA work... 5 Stars.

The beginning of a great adventure!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I'll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do. Give it a read!

Enthralling story line that really pulls you in
…The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character.

About Chris Salisbury
Chris Salisbury has been writing fantasy, science fiction, suspense, and action thrillers for years in independent films. Now he’s expanded his love of good movies, such as Gladiator, Counte of Monte Cristo, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, Star Trek, to the world of books. Trail of Bones is the first book in a planned four part fantasy, young adult series targeted at readers of all ages.
The father of four enjoys a wide range of interests from scuba diving to softball, coaching basketball to playing Battlefield 3 on his Xbox 360 or NCAA Football with his sons. He is also a big advocate for literacy and reading for young boys. There seem to be few titles that appeal to young boys and young men to hold their attention, trigger their imaginations and create a love of reading. Chris is out to change that.
In addition to the Trail of Bones series, he also has a number of other titles in development including historical fiction, action, suspense thrillers, and several science fiction properties. There’s a lot more on the horizon, so enjoy Trail of Bones but be sure to look for more captivating titles from Chris Salisbury in the near future.

“Iris,” [Matty] called out to her.
She shifted her attention from the statue to him and began making her way through the library. As she arrived in the almost empty corner, she followed the steel cable of Hadrian’s swing with her eyes to where it was bolted to the ceiling and admired the canopy of a maple tree that was painted above their heads.
“I love that,” she said softly, before turning to him with confusion. “Why is there a swing in his library?”
“His mother missed the one she grew up with in Dartanyan, so he made one for her,” Matty told her. “Hop on.”
She gave him an awkward grin and took a step away. “Will it hold me?”
“The cable will hold a metric t—” The look she gave him was one frequently made by his mother when she wanted him to spare her whatever technical details he was spewing. “It’s incredible.”
Iris exhaled heavily, still staring at the swing with apprehension, but climbed onto the disk that hung from the ceiling and positioned the layers of her skirt around the cable. “Better than the books?” she asked, crossing her legs modestly at the ankle.
“Yes,” he admitted. “Swing.”
She kicked her foot on the ground to set the swing into motion. “It’s been a few years since I was on a swing.”
Matty pushed her shoulder as she swung close to him, setting her into a spin. She screamed out in surprise and giggled like a little girl. He recalled her story from earlier that night. Removed from school at age ten, apprenticed to a Widow Black Guild master gardener at twelve, working full-time at sixteen, and all the while, she was caring for her paranoid father. He felt sad at the thought of her having to grow up so fast.
As she continued to enjoy the swing in silence, Matty tapped a command on the tablet, and lights began shining on the walls and the bookshelves that surrounded the swing. “Look down.”
Iris tilted her head over her shoulder. The movement altered her spin, slowing it slightly. She gasped in delight at the illusion of a shimmering pool of water below her.
“Drag your foot.”
She did and laughed as her foot created a disturbance across the surface. She kicked her foot up, and the illusion responded by creating dozens of round ripples where “drops” had fallen.
Matty tapped the tablet, and this time, her foot left a mark through virtual sand. Iris dragged her foot a second time and a third. He changed a setting, and her foot cut through the long grasses of a glade. As he switched between dozens of scenes, she swung across daisies and wheat fields, over the tops of evergreen forests. She floated over clouds and stars.
Finally, Iris stopped the swing and looked down as she hovered thousands of feet over Aventine, gripping the steel cable tighter as if she felt she were really up that high. He tapped the tablet to call up the final theme, the one he really wanted to show her.
The high altitude view of Aventine bloomed into thousands of purple and yellow irises. She gaped in awe as the two-dimensional scene became a freestanding holograph growing out of the floor. He activated the setting for sound, and the room was filled with the babble of water. Another setting activated fans in wall vents, mimicking a cool breeze. He selected a third setting, and the fragrances of iris blooms, dirt, and country air blew past them. Her eyes widen more in amazement with every added detail.
Matty sat down on the floor and set the tablet down. Unlike the two-dimensional scenes, the holographic flowers didn’t respond correctly to movement or the presence of mass, the result of Hadrian walking away from the programming when his mother died.
“This is in the Ayame River valley, near my grandfather’s ranch in Dartanyan.” The rest really was Hadrian’s story to tell, Matty decided.
Iris twisted her foot on the ground to turn the swing. “This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he said softly, looking up at the glow on her face. “And I’m sorry about my father’s behavior at dinner. Mine as well.”
“I’m a Widow Black contractor, Matty. Dating his son. The commandant had to ask those questions.”
Matty didn’t think he could be so gracious in her place. “He shouldn’t have asked you at the dinner table.”
“Which is why he did,” she said.
He realized what she had said just before. “Wait. We’re dating?”
She asked nervously, “Aren’t we?”
He hoped the grin on his face wasn’t as grotesque as it felt. “I wasn’t sure.”
“Seriously, Matty! I’m the one who should be nervous.” He didn’t understand and looked at her sideways. “You’re rich. You’re cute. You know about my crazy—”
“Cute?” he squawked.
“Oh my God!” she scoffed. She stopped the swing so she could give him her full attention. “No one is this insecure.”
“And you must be a blind actress,” he said. She restarted the swing. “It is quite convenient that I find a printed Braille book and a girl who can actually read Braille at the same time.”
“Except I can’t read it.”
“You know what I mean.”
She glanced over her shoulder at him as the swing twisted and said, “You may ask anyone who knows me. The only acting skill I have is to make myself invisible.”
“That’s quite a trick,” Matty said. “I’d like to see that.”
She lowered her arm to pass her hand through the holographic irises. “I mean that I can pass unnoticed when I want.”
“I don’t believe you,” he said, shaking his head. “I can’t imagine looking in your direction and seeing anything but you.”
January Black

Sixteen-year-old genius Matty Ducayn has never fit in on The Hill, an ordered place seriously lacking a sense of humor. After his school’s headmaster expels him for a small act of mischief, Matty’s future looks grim until King Hadrian comes to his rescue with a challenge: answer a question for a master’s diploma.
More than a second chance, this means freedom. Masters can choose where they work, a rarity among Regents, and the question is simple.
What was January Black?
It’s a ship. Everyone knows that. Hadrian rejects that answer, though, and Matty becomes compelled by curiosity and pride to solve the puzzle. When his search for an answer turns up long-buried state secrets, Matty’s journey becomes a collision course with a deadly royal decree. He's been set up to fail, which forces him to choose. Run for his life with the challenge lost...or call the king’s bluff.

Wendy S. Russo got her start writing in the sixth grade. That story involved a talisman with crystals that had to be found and assembled before bad things happened, and dialog that read like classroom roll call. Since then, she’s majored in journalism (for one semester), published poetry, taken a course on short novels, and watched most everything ever filmed by Quentin Tarantino. A Wyoming native transplanted in Baton Rouge, Wendy works for Louisiana State University as an IT analyst. She’s a wife, a mom, a Tiger, a Who Dat, and she falls asleep on her couch at 8:30 on weeknights.
