Dragon's Call by K.W. McCabe

In a thoughtless final act of destruction, humans awaken the one creature of legend they have no protection against. Years after the complete subjugation of the human race, Derek, heir of the Dragon Queen, and Cecily, create a tentative friendship. But something or someone is stalking the human enclave. Cecily and Derek must find out who and why before she's next.

4 Stars, 1 Flame

The dragon's have awoken and mankind fought valiantly to rid their world of dragonkind....until the dragon's changed form, becoming a beautiful, powerful version of humans. With one look into their eyes they are able to control humans, ending the war instantly.

"Our curse is that we remain enslaved by their beauty and draconic charm. Theirs is that they must maintain their human guise to keep it that way."

Now the humans are tasked with fixing the damage done to the Earth. Cars, large gas powered equipment, etc are restricted from use and curfew is enforced with an overnight stay in jail if caught after curfew. But someone is taking people, leaving no trace and the people taken never return. Now that someone is focused on Cecily and will have her, no matter the cost.

Cecily is a strong, independent character focused on doing well in school so she can attend the local college and be able to leave her enclave, or town. Before Cecily was born, her father fought the dragons, and when they lost, he was presented to the Queen who then bit off part of his leg. When she was younger, her mother was returning from the market after curfew when someone snatched her off the street. She never made it home. Since her mother's death, Cecily has been the responsible one, always watching out for her twin brother and making sure he stays out of trouble. But when two dragon's show up to attend her high school, Cecily suddenly starts to break all the rules, deciding its time she start living her life for herself, and no one else.

Derek is the son of the queen, heir to the dragon throne, and bored. His fascination with humans leads him to leave his luxurious apartments in the palace for a hovel in a human district. Upon first seeing Cecily he can't help but feel he has met her before. He must talk to her, get to know her. But to have relations with a human is frowned upon in the dragon court, humans are to serve, not love. They are pets and servants. Risking all, Derek pursues Cecily, wanting to know all her secrets and dreams.

I loved the world KW McCabe created. The idea that the world is thrown upside down by dragons awakening and taking over is a new one. The back story is told simultaneously with the main story through flashbacks told using one person's perspective. Usually I find stories that flashback that often are confusing, but KW McCabe integrates it so smoothly its not confusing or irritating. I especially like how during the war, the dragon's began destroying our fairy tales. I hope the author expands on that, and explains why they would do that in her next books. The villain in this story is awesome. Its been awhile since I've read a story where you truly hate the bad guy. While at times I wished for more detailed interactions between the characters, I truly enjoyed Dragon's Call and cannot wait for the second book in the series to be released.

This book was provided to me by the author for an honest review.
